DAY, Vincent H.

Vincent H. Day

Source: Obituary from Greencastle Times; 22 Oct 1885

Vincent H. Day died 14 Oct 1885, after a lingering spell of sickness, in the 60th year of his age. He was noted for his endurance of hard work and exposure, and for his business tact in accumulating real estate. He had advertised for the sale of his personal property before his death, but died before the day of the sale. His disease baffled the skill of his attending physicians, and a post mortem examination revealed the cause of his trouble in the closing up of the pylorus passage, thereby preventing anything from passing through his stomach since last May.

About twenty years ago he lost his first wife and one child with smallpox, himself and Dr. J.H. Robinson were the only attendants at the funeral and with the aid of the Doctor he buried his own wife and child in a drenching rain after night. People were so scared over the epidemic that even the grave diggers would not remain to help fill the grave up.

For his second wife he married Lucinda Frank, daughter of the late Andrew Frank, of Madison township, and sister to Elder A.J. Frank, who survives him. He leaves seven children, five boys and two girls, two of the boys by the last wife. He was buried at Union Chapel, of which church he was a member on Friday evening, a large number attending the funeral, Elder Ezekiel Wright conducting the services. He left a will disposing of his property in such a way that it is thought that an effort will be made to set the will aside.
